Act 40
Mel
BastetâŠ? As in the Egyptian goddess? Mel didnât know much of Egyptian mythology besides the basics: Osiris, Ra and the like. However, he had been fascinated by Bastet as a child; next to being the goddess of fertility, cats, women, sun, intoxicants, and music among other things, she also was the protector of secrets and most importantly: magic.
This woman, currently enshrouded in an aura of intense mystery and calm strength, stood as an epitome of fertility and unmeasurable beauty, with red eyes as piercing as Lusjeâs. He didnât doubt for a second that she was indeed Bastet, the goddess.
âItâs been a long, long time since I met such a devoted soul like you. You donât really come across believers these days. Especially in a city like this.â
âThis city even has a pyramid, though,â Mel said.
The comment summoned a laugh that sounded amused and pleased. He blushed from the feeling that he made her sound so joyful.
âThough ⊠I fear that you must be mistaken. I am agnostic.â
She laughed even more, then lifted her hand and lovingly cupped his cheek.
âYou really are the most peculiar child. Youâre one of the few who know the truth about the existence of our kind, yet you see yourself as an atheist?â
He coughed, a little abashed. When she said it like that, his beliefs really did sound twisted.
âNot an atheist - I just think that Iâll never be able to even partially grasp god, time, space or any other impossible concepts⊠and Iâm not part of any religion.â
Even as he said that, the longer he looked at her and the longer she touched him, the more the thought of worshiping her and only her crept into his mind.
ââTis not important, my sweet little human. You believe in wonder, in magic, in the power of the mind, in the importance of secrets: the virtue of entertainment. This is your religion, and it is mine, too. This is why you are of my kind.
But enough chit-chat.â She withdrew her hand, to his sorrow. âIt is finally time to reveal what you seek of me.â
He suddenly felt incredibly crude. He has visited a goddess to misuse her like a set of yellow pages, basically.
âAh, I see. Donât feel bad about it, you didnât know better.â
How did she -
Ah, right.
Of course she would be able to read his mind.
âIâll try to refrain from doing that from now on. I like to be surprised myself, too, you know. So whom do you seek?â
He cleared his throat. âI, uhm, Iâm looking for an agent. Someone who knows⊠of your existence.â
Her eyes seem to flash with curiosity.
âOh? For what kind of business?â
âMagic.â
She laughed boastfully, her chuckles full of glee and satisfaction.
âI dearly hoped youâd say that. Youâd be a perfect medium for that, I do believe, and I do have just the right, no, perfect person for you. A woman, rough around the edges, with a strong mind; I think that youâll need someone like that. She knows of us well, and sheâs one of your people.â
âMy word,â Mel exclaimed, âThatâs splendid. She really does sound perfect. Where can I find her?â
âNot so fast, child. I require payment.â
âOf⊠of course.â
Melâs mouth became rapidly dry, a lump forming in his throat. He didnât even ask how much, subconsciously aware that she wouldnât accept dollar bills.
Her eyes fixated on his again, almost as if they threatened to take him hostage. âMake a deal with me. Become mine.â
Ah.
There it is.
He wasnât too surprised; in fact, he was almost flattered that he was apparently such a desired object on the demon market.
Though, was it even possible to have a deal with two demons at the same time?
And even if - was a mere address worth selling his soul? At least Lusje had offered him the ability to become part of human history.
He certainly wouldnât mind exchanging Lusje with her.
She reached out with her hand, offering it to him.
âWhat do you say?â
He slowly raised his hand.
Suddenly, the small snout of a white snake emerged from within his sleeve, coiling around his hand in such a way that a handshake couldnât be made, and it looked at him as dumbfounded as a snake could.
âWhat in the fresh hell, youâre not actually, seriously considering shaking her hand, are ya, ya fuckinâ genius?â
