Act 27

Mel

Only after the last slice of the second large pizza Mel finally slowed down and leaned back, able to function properly again.

After they had left the sportsbook with $2000 in their pocket, Lucifer had put Mel’s body in the nearest possible eatery, which happened to be a little pizza place.

The loud atmosphere and music made it easy for Mel to communicate.

“‘bugatti your ass’, really?” was the first thing he said when he was able to talk again.

I’m sorry, I got nervous, the demon answered.

“I find that hard to believe.”

Hey, just because I’m an immortal being, cool, gorgeous and really, really smart, doesn’t mean that I don’t get stage fright.

“You forgot handsome in your humble self-description,” Mel said with a chuckle and started to chow down his salad.

Heeey, I dig where this is going. Startin’ to like ya, kid.

“Don’t lie. You liked me before, or else you wouldn’t have chosen me.”

Well. Maybe a little. But don’t let it get to your head.

“This took so long though. For a minute I thought I was done for. You sure we couldn’t have just taken the casino route?”

In hindsight, you’re right. But this was more fun, wasn’t it?

Mel crunched on a badly cut, way too big piece of cucumber and thought about it.

“It was… an experience.”

An important one. I felt how stressed you were and how angry. You can’t let these states get in your way, especially not as a magician. Let the people believe that you’re dumb. Let ‘em be racist fuckers. And then, when the time has come: play ‘em like cards. Every assumption about you is a new welcomed piece for your misdirection deck.

He thought about the demon’s words. As much as they went against Mel’s philanthropy, they did make sense. Maybe he could use that knowledge in a less mean and more entertaining way, though.

“So how did you do it? Can you actually read minds? And if so, how did you know his friends disliked him?” he asked.

I can read minds, to an extent. It’s annoying and energy-sapping, but it works easier on sinners. He was a whole cesspool of sins, so that wasn’t hard. Didn’t actually know if his friends hate him, or if his ex wife had several boyfriends, but I knew it was his fear. So I used that to our advantage.

“You’re really mean. Also, never read my mind.”

Thank you. And your mind is annoyingly hard to read for me, so I don’t intend to.

Mel put down his fork and lowered his hand to stroke his belly. It now wasn't only aching because of hunger, but because being overstuffed, too. He flinched when he felt that it had gotten even bigger than after the last binge.

“I … I want to go back to the hotel. I feel uncomfortable being seen like this … Will my body now always look like this?”

Lucifer faltered, then commented: Not always, but most of the time.

“Oof. That’s… that’s a bit concerning. I’ll have to buy shapewear or something.”

Fuck that. I can make people ignore it. Not completely, but in a way that they don’t care ‘bout it.

“Good for you. But I don’t feel comfortable looking like this. In fact, I’m going to buy one right now.”

Mel’s sleeve wasn’t pulled up, so the snake tattoo was hidden; But he was pretty sure the snake was rolling its eyes again.
