The car ride started quiet. She smelled like wine and vanillaâmy mother-in-law, dressed to kill after a night out with her friends, slouched back in the passenger seat, shoes off, legs crossed, a lazy smile playing on her lips. The rain tapped against the windshield like static, and the city lights blurred through the windows as I drove. Sheâd pulled her hair up loosely, a few strands clinging to her neck, and her dress had ridden just a little higher than it should have, exposing the smooth, toned curve of her thigh.
I told myself not to look. I told myself it didnât mean anything. But then she reached into her purse and pulled out a small compact mirror and a tube of lipstick. Red, bold, glossy. âGod, I look wrecked,â she said casually, flipping down the visor. âYou donât mind if I touch up a bit, do you?â She didnât wait for a reply. I tried to keep my eyes on the road, but every swipe of that lipstick had weight. Every slow drag, every pout, every little smirk she gave herself in the mirror. She knew I was watching. I knew she knew.
âRedâs a dangerous color, donât you think?â she asked, still focused on her reflection. âIt leaves stains. Marks things. Makes a mess of all the wrong places.â Her voice was soft, almost thoughtful. Then she turned toward me, her tone shifting into something velvet-smooth. âYou like watching me do this, donât you?â she whispered. âBet youâve thought about these lips before. Bet youâve wondered how deep they go.â She let the words hang in the air, heavy and wet.
I didnât respond. I couldnât. My hands were tight on the wheel, and my cock was already straining against my jeans.
She turned back to the mirror, ran her thumb slowly across the edge of her freshly painted bottom lip. âSorry,â she said after a beat, her voice lower now, quieter. âBlame the wine. It makes me a little horny. And besidesâŠâ She let out a small laugh. âIâm your mother-in-law. This is completely inappropriate.â
But then our eyes met in the rearview mirror, and for a second the air between us felt denseâwarm, buzzing, heavy with something unspoken. She didnât look away. Neither did I. Then, slowly, she turned toward the window, her profile soft in the low dashboard glow. For a moment, I thought that was itâthat the moment would pass, like a thought weâd both pretend we didnât have.
But then she spoke, almost to herself.
âLipstick used to get everywhere. Took years to learn how not to smudge it.â
She looked back at me, a subtle smile playing at her lips.
âNow the only time I let it get messy⊠is when I mean to..."
