Some more BTS deer hide photos! After skinning came defleshing, salting, a salt bath, drying and lots of waiting! I also learnt about the existence of deer keds, upon finding one on my head 😅 they're a sort of tick like creature that really cling to the hide and it's quite difficult to get them off. Any I missed would have been sorted out by the salt bath anyway though I thought! This was all such a learning process!

Tom captured me floating around atop the cliffs of the gorge back in February! It was SO intensely windy and therefore bitterly cold that high up, so we didn't manage long. But alongside his wicked shots here the day also birthed some further ideas for future clifftop ponders that's for sure! I've been dying to do a sunset silhouette one up there for as long as I can remember 🍃🍃🍃

The doe a week later!

A week after skinning the deer I found in the woods, we trundled back to the same spot to have a looksee and she was almost completely gone!

She'd been dragged about 15 metres away and absolutely ravaged. So we were thinking probably badgers! It would have been awesome to do some sort of timelapse vid and catch the feeding creatures in the night... I might start having a think if that would be feasible. We left the bones there for a bit more of a nature clean.

Back in January I taught myself how to skin a deer!

~ I didn't harm her, I found her like this! ~

Whilst out walking the dog we came across this beautiful doe, in the most pristine condition, just exactly as you see in the first photos. I honestly have no idea how she died, but it sadly did look like she didn't have a great time from the leg angel marks in the dirt. There were no injuries that I could see at all though which was interesting!

Taught myself how to skin a rabbit!

Last August I was out hiking and found this tiny bunny on the path up the Gorge, in such perfect condition! I honestly have no idea how it died. The poor lil buddy was still warm and completely intact, and obviously being such a vulture I wanted to preserve what I could and try and learn some new skills in the process!

I'd only been preserving feet, wings and tails at this point so had literally no clue how, but I wanted to see if I could skin the little dude and ta...

Bone scrubbin'

Stumbled across most of a complete sheep skeleton during our woodland wanderings recently!

We found a spot in the forest where a farmers field meets the woods, and along the fence was littered with sheep bones. You could see where the foxes had made their way through, caught their prey, and brought them back through the fence to the undergrowth to feed.

I finally got around to giving them a bit of a scrub the other day and maaaan they were mucky. One vert eve...
